In addition to its search index, Yahoo! have a Web Directory that costs $299 annually. DMOZ and the Yahoo! Web Directory are the two most most important directories for sites to be listed in. As DMOZ is free but does not list every site, the question is often asked if the $299 annual charge for the Yahoo! Web Directory is worth it. It is important not to confuse a paid listing in the Yahoo! Web Directory with a 'pay for inclusion' in the Yahoo! search index - they are both very different things and it is common to see some confusion in various forums between the two.
 
 
   
What does a listing in the Yahoo! Web Directory get you?  
  • Yahoo! could be considered an authority site, so links from it could be considered by search engines to be more trustworthy, if they look at such a thing.
  • Links are usually from pages with their own high link popularity (high PR, in Google's terminology).
  • If you are in a competitive market, a link from Yahoo! may make the difference - especially if competitors are listed.
  • It is not known if Yahoo! gives an extra boost in its search rankings to sites listed in its own Directory, but some believe it does.
  • Yahoo! has several clones of its directory, so several links are obtained (eg Yahoo! UK & Ireland; Yahoo! Canada)
  • The description of the site in the Yahoo! search results is usually taken from the Directory, rather than a random snipet of text on the page
 
   
 
Disadvantages of a Yahoo! Web Directory listing:  
  • It costs $299/yr. This is non-refundable if your suggested or submitted site does not meet the criteria for a listing.
  • The title of the site that is used in the Yahoo! search results is taken from the Directory and not from the title of the page in the search index (in some circumstances this may make the title of the site not look so attractive in the search results, as it could just be your company name, rather than a more descriptive title of the pages content).
 
   
 
Free inclusion:  
Yahoo! does offer free inclusion for non-profit sites and free submission for profit sites in some sections of the directory (but for profit sites are not commonly listed this way)
