| Web directories: |
|
The key part of any marketing strategy for a website is getting links to ensure that search engines see a site as being more important. Submitting a site to web directories is an important part of that strategy to get links and traffic to the site ( submitting to search engines is not important). |

There are a large number of free web directories and paid web directories (some better than others). Some of the free web directories do require a reciprocal link in exchange for a listing. Directories can either be general or specific to a particular niche. |

| Web Directory Issues: |
|
There are some controversies surrounding the directory 'industry' leading to rivalries between directory owners and some SEO forums:
- there has recently been an 'explosion' in the number of directories, leading some to question motives of the owners.
- some are "fronts" for other businesses, primarily aiming to build the link popularity of the primary business.
- some of the directories have been dropped from search engines
- are they really interesting in creating a "web directory" or selling link popularity
- the "business" or "directory" model adopted by each directory is different, with opinions being different as to which is better
- some consider those directories that require a reciprocal link to be nothing more than link farms. We have a Hall of Shame for those directories that did not provide a reciprocal link back or removed the link wthout notification.
